To make money selling stock footage, there are really only

3 things you need to know!

  1. Exactly, how much money will you make selling stock footage?

  2. Where is the best place to sell your stock footage?

  3. How to sell more stock video footage online?

Doesn't sound hard does it?

I guarantee these will be the 3 hardest (honest) answers to find anywhere!

Why?

  1. Anyone actually making money from sales is unlikely to tell you!
(And those that aren't making money selling stock, will likely feed you a
crap load of garbage to sell clicks via ads)

  2. Every Stock Video Library will tell you they are the best!
(Even if they aren't selling much footage, because they need your vision,
    to stay market competitive!)

  3. How to sell more stock video footage online?
Stock libraries do not want "stand out" contributors, as it's bad for their business model and contributor recruitment. (Plus point #1 again!)

So why would we share this information & how do we have it??

#1: We have 15 years of first hand experience! We sell stock footage!
       Not in 2012 or 2015... Now!  2019!
It's what we do and have done for a very long time!
We are international Stock Footage Consultants

#2: We are part of a large affiliate network, we have hundreds of photographers that have signed onto the the major stock photo libraries through us. If you decide to join a stock library through us, we make a small commission when you sell footage, so it stands to reason, we want you to sell a ridiculous amount of stock footage! It does not cost you a single cent or affect your royalties! We only make money if you do!

We have been helping contributors sell stock video since 2007 and currently have over 250 cameramen, DOP's, photographers and Cinematographers that have signed up with a stock footage library via this web site. So we are fiercely keen for you to make money and maximize returns! If you don't make money.. neither do we!  We only make our small affiliate % if you are selling stock footage! So we want to help!

If you are equipped with these 3 fundamental answers outlined above, then you are ready to start making real money or save yourself a lot of wasted time and choose a different career path. It's not for everyone!

A bit about the stock footage industry today

LAST UPDATE MARCH 2019
Before I start...lets get one thing straight!  Any article or report that was written about stock footage (or photography) more than a few months ago, that discusses stock video footage sales is likely to be around 80% outdated!  I have seen dozens of seemingly "current" Web Articles,  Books and E-Books on Amazon from 2012 - 2019, and these are ridiculously incorrect now!  This is an industry that moves at light speed and the articles from a few years or even a few months ago are a long way out of touch! Things happen in a week!   It's just like the real stock (share) market!
(If you have read an interesting web article, look at the footer and see when it was written)

We have daily dealings with most of the stock footage library websites and over 250 affiliate photographers that sell stock footage as part of our affiliate network, so I can promise you the information we provide, is fairly accurate and current!  We also do our best to update the top 10 stock footage sites every few weeks or anytime we feel there has been shift in stock footage sales!  (if the date hasn't changed, neither has the sales report info!)

We also supply direct links to stock footage libraries we think are worthwhile, if you would like to sell your own stock video footage online.

Our E-Book "Take Stock" contains all the information on this page and much more, so if you are serious about selling stock, we strongly recommend this small purchase, as a few dollars very well spent! For less than a coffee, you can cut straight to the chase and start selling. We are not owned, connected or influenced by any stock video libraries and all information is from our own evidence or findings.

WHAT MAKES US QUALIFIED TO COMMENT ON STOCK FOOTAGE SALES?

  • We are the winners of the "Best Stock Footage Provider" (Enterprise APAC Magazine)

  • We managed Australia's largest Government Media Stock Video Library for 25 years

  • We have over 250 affiliate stock photographers & can see everything they sell (or don't sell)

  • We currently have thousands of our own video clips and images listed with stock websites

  • We have spent over 30 years in the television production industry selling stock

  • We currently manage the largest private stock image and video library of Australia
  • We have over 50 national Awards for television production

WHAT IS SELLING STOCK FOOTAGE ALL ABOUT?

Its pretty simple really! You shoot video clips on your video camera, digital camera or drone and upload them for sale to a stock footage library. They will then sell them to respective purchasers on your behalf. It won't cost you anything , but they will take a commission for this service!
Sounds simple hey!?

ABOUT STOCK FOOTAGE SALES

Whilst it all sounds simple.. , it can be very hard to get informative or credible information from people in the know, about selling stock footage online, as most people have a vested interest or something to gain... the stock footage libraries want your stock footage (cheap) to gain critical mass and many "stock footage information" web sites, that seem to offer information about selling stock video, don't actually sell stock footage themselves (or haven't for years!)! They just aim to get millions of views, collect a few emails and then plaster their web pages with paying ads, to try and make some money. The majority  of these articles are years out of date!

STOCK FOOTAGE HISTORY
Whilst Stock photography libraries are nothing new these days, stock video footage is a relative new comer to the stock photo library families and are having some sporadic successes for many cameramen (and women), film makers and TV producers. It still has a way to go and the question begs, will we make a lot of money as the "take up" rate increases for stock footage sales / buyers, or will it go from viable to over supply overnight!?

I guess it's fair to predict, based on Stock Image libraries, that it may overcrowd or over saturate quickly (just like all things creative!) in the not too far distant future. But for the moment... there does seem to be quite a few $$ to make in stock video.

Not so long ago, we were making $1000 - $5000 for a single photograph buy out licence and video material was selling at around $100 per single second. But then schools decided to teach it and technology manufacturers decided that they could make a shite load of money ramping up the artificial intelligence and putting a camera (or editing software) in the hands of anyone strong enough to lift it and here we are today... over saturated and over crowded!

So can the average punter still make money from stock footage? Do you need to be a professional film maker to make money from stock footage? How hard is it, to make money from stock footage and which is the best stock footage library to join or host your video footage with? (Possibly one of the most important questions)

Disclaimer: Anything discussed or reported in these articles is from our own experience, affiliates or from other industry professionals that we work alongside or have interviewed about the same topics. We have spent over 30 years working in the TV Industry and 25 years working with and selling stock photos / video with varying success. Any information can change at the drop of a hat, although that said, I believe a longer term pattern is now forming with many of the stock sites and this information can be deemed as pretty reliable at the time of publishing. All and any stock footage or photo web sites I mention by name are registered to their respective companies and we have no shareholding, ownership or vested interest in them. Although we do subscribe to some of their affiliate programs. (Meaning .. if you click on an affiliate link on this page .. we may be eligible for a small commission)

STOCK VIDEO FOOTAGE REVENUES

How much money can you make selling stock video footage in 2019?

And can you make money selling footage online?

I guess the simple answer is YES, you can make money selling stock footage online!  The question is, how much and how hard is it? How much time are you prepared to put into your video production for the return on investment? We present accurate and first hand information in our upcoming E-book on how much income you will likely earn, compared to your quantity of video clips online. In fact, we demonstrate EXACTLY how much money we make from selling video online per 100 clips! It is unlikely you'll find much (if any) reliable statistics or data from the actual stock video web sites themselves, as one would possibly imagine this information may not look all that favorable in terms of a "per photographer" return. For example, one of the major stock libraries has just announced they have paid $500 Million to contributors this year! However, they also boast over 156 Million images online, which means each image is worth $3.20 for the year

The current demand, is nowhere near as high as the volume of stock footage being uploaded at this point in time. And we all know it's a whole lot of work to produce, shoot, edit, keyword and upload stock footage and then not get paid for it!

However, unlike still photographs in stock libraries, you have a better chance of competing for stock footage buyers at this stage of the game and reasonable results can be expected for suitable vision. In 2016, we sold  about 1 video clip, out of 15 uploaded each month, so if you have 150 clips, one could have expected to sell 10 - 15 video clips per month. In 2017, this has already changed significantly and 150 clips is more likely to yield 7 - 12 sales. The good thing is, that stock footage is worth significantly more, than stock images per sale. For example, dependent on the stock library, 12 stock footage sales would yield about $300 USD. But of course there's more to it than that! What if you spend all your time and energy shooting, editing and uploading to a spiffy looking stock photo website and they actually aren't doing well in stock footage sales! Or even worse.. you have signed on, as an exclusive contributor and you can't even sell your footage anywhere else!

DISASTER! All your amazing footage sitting in a speccy looking database and not one sale!

Because you are uploading your stock images to an amazing Stock Photo Website, it DOES NOT mean, they have made any traction in the stock footage arena (And vice versa) It is critical to be investing your stock footage with the right companies, just the same as investing in a stock portfolio on the share market! We spend a good deal of time monitoring this and you will find links via our E-Book or a quick overview in our Top 10.

Already the stock footage industry seems to be showing the signs of becoming fairly specialized quite fast. Shooting generic warm and fuzzy images from your home town might yield a few sales, but the real money is probably more in stock video clips of "topic specific" generics. e.g. Health Care is big. Lifestyle is big, Mobile Phone clips are big. (model released) faces are big! Renewable Energy! The clips don't need to be long, in fact most stock library guidelines suggest they want them between 10 - 30 seconds, which means you can often cut a days filming into many, many variations and versions of the same clip! (More on that later and featured in our E-Book)  And then there is motion video background video loops, the latest addition to the stock footage market. (More on that as well in our E-Book and who uses them)

Quality is paramount, most libraries are anal about technical quality, often more important than the actual content!! Creative works aren't always that well received unless they can see a sale in them and they hate repetition.

I have some amazing TV news clips that fall short of their mark for quality and yet I have plenty of crappy clips online that are technically spot on.  Even things like news or documentary video clips that could never be shot again often get rejected on the grounds of quality... Go figure?

If you are serious about selling stock video footage, we encourage you to purchase our E-Book for the price of a coffee! We are fairly certain you'll find this "hard to get" information the perfect way to get started, help boost current sales or help you make the decision not to start selling stock footage at all!

So let's look at how much money you will make per month, per clip! SEE MORE >>
